Acupuncture & Chinese Herbal Medicine for
Maternity Care
Thousands of years ago, the Chinese began recognizing and treating a variety of pregnancy-related ailments using Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs. A highly effective system of medicine evolved that can enhance a healthy pregnancy and treat many ailments during these special months. The ancient texts contain treatments for infertility, preventing miscarriage, treating nausea and vomiting, turning a baby into the right position, bleeding in pregnancy, and many other conditions. Careful attention was paid to the health and well being of the mother and baby by supporting and balancing the four treasures of yin, yang, qi, and blood, as well as promoting their proper circulation and distribution.
Today, we know Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs work in treating a wide range of ailments in pregnancy. We understand that Acupuncture increases blood flow to the ovaries, optimizes ovarian functioning and follicular development, increases the chance of healthy ovum and corpus luteum, and decreases the incidence of miscarriage. Acupuncture also increases blood flow through the uterus, promoting a healthy endometrial lining and optimizing placental functioning. Results of this increased blood flow include increased delivery of oxygen and nutrition to the baby—giving baby the best chance of being healthy.

Often women experience an increase in energy and vitality during this time. For some women, there are obstacles to this joyful experience. I see Acupuncture and herbal therapy as a wonderful means to remove the obstacles preventing a woman from feeling great during pregnancy and connecting to the joy of being pregnant.
